Slowing Down
The Fall 2024 issue of Rochester History from RIT Press was another slim volume that I read in two sittings, starting at the back with what I ended up enjoying the most: a short article about wallpaper used in the Seneca Hotel in 1908 in Rochester, NY, that was designed by Seneca Wolf Clan member, Moses Shongo. The brief biography and story of the wallpaper were fascinating.
The article on early birth control was disheartening. How much of this stressful topic would be avoided by a living wage for women and men? Same for the essay review on “Your Children are Greatly in Danger” about segregation in Rochester city schools.
The book review of New York’s Burned Over District: A Documentary History interested me. While it was tempting to check out the 400-page book, I’ll wait for now. As for the “Hill Cumorah Legacy Project” at RIT, someone will be grateful for this generous sharing of an academic project.
This is the beginning of Max Ehmann’s Desiderata: “Go placidly among the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.”
