Remembering and Honoring
I still have the index cards that I used then and at one time, I would have been able to say which item came from which source. Reading the credits felt like time traveling to authors who opened me up to the early history of Western New York. I am very grateful for the meticulous research and organization that Emerson Klees had in the decades before the Finger Lakes exploded in popularity.
It felt strange to skim through books I’d read 20 years ago, including: Persons, Places and Things In the Finger Lakes Region (1993); Persons, Places, and Things Around The Finger Lakes Region (1994); The Erie Canal in the Finger Lakes Region: The Heart of New York State (1996); Underground Railroad Tales: With Routes Through the Finger Lakes Region (1997); More Legends and Stories of the Finger Lakes Region (1997); and The Iroquois Confederacy: History and Legends (2003).
All this is helping me sort through and condense a wide range of information into a work-in-progress, “Rochester’s Old South Avenue District.” More to come.
