As for the 2007 winner, the higher power of lucky by susan patron, it gave a good look into the mind and heart of a 10-year old girl who longed for a permanent foster mother. The cluster of neighbors in the high-desert hamlet of Hard Pan, CA, were revealed through Lucky’s listening in on 12-Step meetings, for smokers, drinkers and gamblers. That they all hit rock bottom before finding their Higher Power made Lucky wonder what she had to do. Good story with a great ending.
