In the Atlantic Division, Woven of the World by Katey Howes, illustrated by Dinare Mirtalipova, gave an overview of traditional weaving from China, Egypt, Iberia, Peru, the Pacific Northwest coast and Europe. The rich illustrations, complete with a playful cat, were a feast for the eyes. The back matter glossary and history were a treat for the mind. Well done.

Pedro & Daniel by Federico Erebia was another New England Honor book. This honest story told of two young brothers whose mother scorned them because they weren’t into sports the way manly boys should be. It gave an authentic look at the everyday life of a Mexican-American family in 1970s Ohio. I hung in through their summer travels to visit family in Mexico but got worn out going back and forth for the translation of dichos, proverbs or sayings, that filled each section. Definitely one to digest slowly.
